Jack Chivers was born and raised in western Pennsylvania in the suburbs of Pittsburgh (Bethel Park and Mt. Lebanon). He joined the Navy to see the world (actually graduating from high school in Kenitra, Morocco.) While in the Navy, he participated in the Cuba blockade that almost became the invasion of Cuba. Also, he was on the USS Lake Champlain aircraft carrier that picked up Commander Sheppard after his history-making first flight in space. Although an air controlman in rating, Jack was mostly assigned to special services playing football and basketball up and down the East coast. (He came by his sports enthusiasm early on.) After his Navy adventures, Jack attended several colleges playing both basketball and football, even playing in a semi-pro capacity. These are what he calls his “jock years." During this time of adventure, Jack found himself in a resort area on a 4th of July. That resort area was Detroit Lakes. As with other non-natives, the summer fun pulled him in. He needed a vocation that would allow him to stay here. A career in real estate made sense to not only live and earn a living in this paradise but to market the opportunity to others. That was 40 years ago, April 1966 to be exact. It was at that time that he sold his first property, The Little Lebanon Supper Club on Height of Land Lake. Over the years, he has sold many familiar area businesses, from newspapers and radio stations to beer distributorships and bowling alleys from Williston and Dickinson, North Dakota to Minneapolis and Canada, and countless resort properties (See Commercial and Business Sales). His sales portfolio reads like a lakes area history lesson a who’s who of area people and places. In the mid 1980’s Jack expanded his interests even more by investing in Lake Region Travel and starting Magnum Tours, which lead to co-ownership in Captain Morgan’s Retreat, a resort in sun-drenched Belize, Central America. Jack developed this resort from ground zero, and it still remains a top tropical destination. To date, Magnum Tours is a leading travel wholesaler for Central America. During this time, the majority of Jack’s energies were in the travel industry while still remaining in real estate. He thoroughly enjoyed the travel-related experiences, but by the late 1990’s real estate was beckoning again for his full-time attention. He sold his interests in Captain Morgan’s Retreat, retired from the Board of High Plains Ethanol Corporation in Wichita Kansas, and returned to focus solely on what he knows well and does best…selling real estate. Presently Jack has engaged himself in marketing high-end lake property, handling 1031 exchanges and brokering business and commercial sales, ironically getting back to where he started. His long, successful career has afforded him the opportunity to have many rich experiences and acquire a wealth of interesting friends and acquaintances.
